As a single person who likes to cook I found this product especially helpful since you don't necessarily want to cook up a pot of chili or stew or something and have to eat it every day for the next week to keep it from going bad. I just pop it in the bags and freeze it where it keeps for months. Also very helpful for things like cheese which we all know does not have the refrigerator life we'd like it to have. While the bags and rolls are expensive, if you think before you seal you can get good repeat useage out of them. I use the rolls and if I buy beef or chicken in bulk I seal them in a bag that is bigger than the piece by about a half, when I use it I wash the bag, and keep it for the next bit of chicken and so on. And if I seal something that's not raw meat I wash it and use it for incrementally smaller things such as cold cuts then maybe cheese... |

That means food stays fresh longer than when it's merely refrigerated or frozen. Meat, for example, remains good in the freezer for about six months; frozen inside a vacuum package, it remains good for two to three years--and it doesn't suffer freezer burn, either. Fish, coffee, cheese, crackers, sugar, nuts, oils, and wine all stay fresh three to five times longer when stored in a vacuum, whether they're frozen, refrigerated, or at room temperature. Also, silverware and other metal items won't tarnish when stored in a vacuum-sealed bag.Like all FoodSaver machines, this one vacuums air from containers and seals bags with a simple one-touch operation. The machine measures 15 by 5-1/2 by 3-1/2 inches, weighs 5 pounds, has a cord-storage compartment, and cleans easily with a damp, soapy cloth. It carries a one-year warranty against defects. An instruction booklet and video accompany the machine. The basic FoodSaver container is Tilia's three-layer VacLoc bag: it has two plastic layers and an outer nylon layer to keep moist foods (such as meat loaf or chocolate cake) moist, dry foods (such as brown sugar or flour) dry, and all foods from leaking odor. Included in this kit is one 11- by 10-inch roll for bagging, three quart size bags, and two gallon bags. For cooking, the bags can go directly into a microwave oven or boiling water. They're resealable, reusable, and dishwasher-safe. --Fred Brack |
| Does what it advertises, worth getting I picked up one of these at a local store and have overall been satisfied with it. It's particularly great for a single person like me, to buy in bulk and freeze out portions that won't go bad before I can eat them. My main issue is with using larger bags. I have a hard time getting a good seal, as it almost always wrinkles at some point, no matter how careful I am. It often takes me two or three tries to get it sealed right. Again, this is only with the really large bags that I had this problem. Smaller ones seem to work fine. As others mention, you will get the best value and use out of this if you leave room in the bags so they can be reused. They are stiff enough to be easy to wash out so this is well worth doing. One other comment I would have is that you are most likely to use this if you have counter space for it. I have to keep it in a cabinet and often find I don't want to go to the trouble of dragging it out to use it. So I often don't seal stuff that I could... |
