The kit consists of a bowl, a microwave slotted tray to put your potato slices in, a mandolin style slicing blade, and a spiked handle to use to hold the potato so that you do not accidentally slice off the end of one of your fingers. I scrubbed a potato and sliced it with the blade--requires a bit more pressure than the blade on my big mandolin slicer but the slices were VERY thin and consistent and did cut pretty quickly. I arranged the slices in the tray, shook a little sea salt over the slices, put the tray on a paper plate and zapped it two minutes in the microwave. VOILA--potato chips! Humma) My wife bought one at TJMaxx and gave to me for Christmas. The mandolin slicer does cut very thin slices that cook up nicely. It wants to slide off of the included bowl (used to catch the slices and/or serve the chips). If you have a slicer that will cut as thin but is easier to us, you may want to skip the included slicer. In our microwave, it takes more like 4 minutes (the time given in the directions) to cook a full tray of chips. The little handle on top of the holder does not get hot, so you can pick it up right out of the microwave. I use small-size potatoes because slices of large, baker-size potatoes would probably not work well. As the other review said, the slices shrink a lot and tend to curl, which would probably be worse with larger slices. Sure, it takes a few rounds to cook all of a small potato, but it takes less time than it would to heat the oil in a small fryer and then fry a few chips at a time, plus you skip... |
